What Type Of Fishing And Boating Sunglasses Are Best?

Whether you are a weekend angler or a pro fisherman one of the most important things you can do is wear a good pair of sunglasses.

Fishing and boating sunglasses are needed to protect your eyesIf you are in a fresh water lake fishing for large mouth bass or out in the Gulf fishing for marlin, picking the correct pair of sunglasses is crucial. Exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun without these sunglasses can and will damage your eyes. When it is reflected off the surface of the water the ultraviolet light is intensified and potentially more damaging to the eyes and visual system. Studies show that over time, exposure to these harmful rays of the sun can damage the eyes. Many eye diseases like macular degeneration and cataracts may be linked to sun exposure. Many people will develop small growths on to their corneas called pterygiums and suffer from dry eyes as a result of exposure to the UV radiation from the sun. A more acute and painful problem related to the sun’s rays is a sunburn to the cornea called solar keratitis. Fishermen and boaters that haven’t worn the proper sun protection are also more likely to develop skin cancers in and around the eye. The simplest and easiest solution is to make sure the avid fishermen and boaters can be educated on the consequences of not wearing the proper sunglasses. The huge benefits of wearing the proper sunglasses while boating or fishing justifies spending a little money on a good pair of sunglasses. The next time you are planning a deep sea fishing trip out of Destin Florida or entering a Bass Tournament in Toledo Bend Texas, plan on bringing and wearing a good name brand polarized sunglass. How Do I Choose The Best Pair Of Sunglasses For Fishing And Boating?

Get a good pair of sunglassesInvest in your vision and purchase a good pair of name brand polarized sunglasses if you are boating or fishing. A good name brand like Oakley or Costa Del Mar will block the glare coming off the surface of the water and also provide 100% UV protection. In my eye care centers throughout Florida we deal with these patients on a daily basis. I have found that the two most popular sunglasses we fit on our patients that need a prescription are the Costa Del Mar Eliminator and the Costa Del Mar Pescador. These frames work well because they have a relatively flat front surface that is ideal for prescription lenses. They have total protection from the top, bottom and sides. These frames are very adjustable by a competent optometrist or optician and fit most faces well. These frames are also great at high speeds on the water since the wind cannot get under the frame and pull them away from the face. The Eliminator and Pescador have side shields that increase your peripheral vision which is important off shore or in a high speed boat.

For the boater or fisherman who really likes to go fast on the water, check out the Costa Del Mar Fathom and the Costa Del Mar Turbine. These two frames use Hydrolite, a rubberized composite combined with an advanced nylon material to produce a frame that is extremely comfortable and really grips the head in extreme conditions. The Costa Del Mar Triple Tail is also extremely popular. However it really boils down to personal preference since the entire line of Costa Del Mar is really quite good. I also like the Oakley M Frame Sweep grey polarized for deep sea fishing, and the Oakley M Frame Sweep in amber polarized for shallow and early morning fishing.

Polarized lenses are crucial while on the water to block the surface reflection and prevent the glare from interfering with your vision. Polarized lenses enable you to see not only the fish in the water, but also any object that may be just under the surface of the water prior to hitting it. The ultimate boating and fishing sunglass should fit well, have a full field of vision, have good top, bottom and side protection, and should be polarized with a UV filter in the monomer or UV coating. To even further enhance ones vision while wearing sunglasses, a back surface anti-reflective coating will decrease the amount of light reflected to your eyes from the back of the lens.

Fishing and boating with proper sunglasses Fishing sunglasses come with a lot of different colored lenses. I recommend a brown or copper lens for the majority of late evening, early morning and shallows fishing. A grey lens is best for fishing in the middle of the afternoon or deep sea fishing. If it is very foggy, overcast or cloudy, fishing sunglasses should have a yellow, orange or amber tint.

Fishermen who have had cataract surgery and have implants in their eyes would benefit from the yellow, amber or orange colored lenses because of their blue blocking attributes. After the human crystalen lens has been removed in cataract surgery, the high intensity visible spectrum of the sun (the blue light), may be very damaging to the retina.

In my opinion, the best sunglass lens combination currently on the market is any of the Costa Del Mar sunglasses with the Wave 580 lens in copper or grey.
Simply go to the drop down bar on any Costa Del Mar sunglasses at and click on the Wave 580 glass lens. These lenses minimize glare thus improving visual performance and protecting the eyes at the same time, and they help to block the yellow light that improves overall contrast. The lenses are made of glass so they are great for the boaters and salt water fishermen because they are quite resistant to scratching. Remember to go to when purchasing your sunglasses. Great fishing and happy boating.
